What are clay pellets?

We supply some of our seeds in clay pellets. This makes them super easy to plant, and the seeds actually germinate faster and more effectively than bare seeds.

This works because the seeds are rinsed first and then lightly pre-germinated in a process called 'priming'.

Since this process makes the seeds a bit more delicate, they’re given a protective coating of clay.

Which types of seeds are in clay pellets?

All Salanova lettuce varieties:

And also Crystal lettuce, which has been in the shop since early 2025.

Shorter shelf life

Pre-germinated seeds won't last as long as non-germinated seeds. These pellets are guaranteed to last up to 9 months, so you’ll want to plant them fairly soon. But if you keep them dry and cool in the fridge, you can extend their viability a bit - up to around a year and a half.

To get the most and fastest harvest from these seeds, we strongly recommend starting them indoors first. Then, once they’re small plants, transplant them outside into your garden box.
