How do you grow Crystal lettuce?
The Makkelijke Moestuin app explains step-by-step how to sow, grow, and harvest it:
Crystal lettuce takes about six to seven weeks to grow from a seed into a plant that you can harvest for the first time.
Especially in the first few weeks, the little plant is quite vulnerable to bad weather and pests like slugs. That's why you start it indoors and plant the grown seedling in your box about 4 weeks later.
Another advantage of starting indoors is that you can make optimal use of your spaces this way. Because in those four weeks, something else can be there first.
(If you don't want to start indoors, you can also sow directly in your box from April. But be sure to protect your seedling well against unfavorable weather and pests.)

As soon as you see the seedling emerge, remove the plastic wrap. From then on, keep the pot in full light but preferably not warmer than about 60°F. A windowsill in an unheated room or greenhouse is ideal.
Rotate it a quarter turn every day to prevent it from growing crooked, and keep the mix moist.
3 to 4 weeks later, transfer the plant to a spot in your outdoor box.

Taking care of Crystal lettuce isn't a big deal and basically comes down to keeping the mix moist.
About 2 weeks later, you can start harvesting the first leaves.

Eventually, the head gets pretty big and surprisingly firm.
If you harvest the outer leaves each time - and not the whole plant at once - the plant will keep growing from the inside, and you can keep harvesting for a few weeks.

If you're planting the seedling outside, you'll need this:
- a 30x30 cm patch

Is Crystal lettuce healthy?
Yeah, just as healthy as all other types of lettuce and healthier than iceberg lettuce.
It contains vitamin K, A, B9, the mineral potassium, and antioxidants like beta-carotene.
Plus, it's packed with fiber, along with a lot of moisture that helps keep you hydrated. And only a few calories 🙂

What do you use Crystal lettuce for?
The name says it all: Crystal lettuce is super tasty in all kinds of salads.
But because this lettuce is so pretty and even stays crispy when heated, it's also used a lot for garnishing, in sandwiches and burritos, on burgers, and you name it.
We even use it in stir-fry and pasta dishes 🙂
