More about our Batavia green lettuce

This tasty lettuce variety grows quickly, shoots very late, and the heads get an enormous amount of curled leaves that are all the same size.

Species name: Salanova - Batavia (green)
Family: leaf
Quantity per box: 1
Height: 15 to 25 cm (front or middle row)
Sowing time: mid April - mid August
Sowing depth: 0.5 to 1 cm
Germination time: between 5 and 18°C in 2 to 14 days
Time to harvest: from 5-7 weeks
Sunlight: can be used in the sun as well as in the shade

Salanova varieties are specially cultivated to produce a higher yield per head while also sprouting faster and growing better than regular lettuce.

To support this, the seeds are pre-germinated, which makes them more delicate. To protect them, they are coated in a layer of clay. This is why they are more expensive, but each head provides an abundant harvest over a long period.

You will receive 12 clay pellets, each containing one seed. So, be mindful when sowing.

Hoe zaai en kweek je Batavia pluksla?

The Makkelijke Moestuin app explains step-by-step how to sow, grow, and harvest it:

Pre-sowing

Level 1: Voorzaaien

Batavia lettuce takes about six to seven weeks to grow from a seed into a plant that you can harvest for the first time.

Especially in the first few weeks, the little plant is quite vulnerable to bad weather and pests like slugs. That's why you start it indoors and plant the grown seedling in your box about 4 weeks later.

Another advantage of starting indoors is that you can make optimal use of your spaces this way. Because in those four weeks, something else can be there first.

If you don't want to start indoors, you can also sow directly in your box from April. But be sure to protect your seedling well against unfavorable weather and pests.

Sowing and growing green Batavia lettuce

Levels 4 t/m 8: Wennen aan de buitenlucht en uitplanten in je bak

Growing this lettuce is simple: put a clay pill in a hole and keep the mix moist. Because the heads grow quite large, only 1 mature plant fits in a patch.

In a cold spring you can cover the plants at night with the MM-muts to make them grow faster.

Watch out for snails: they love the seedlings. Once the plants are a bit bigger, they leave this species alone. Super easy.

The step-by-step sowing and cultivation instructions for red lettuce are in the MM-app. You can also preview the entire cultivation process on the Knowledge Base.

What do you use green plucking lettuce for?

The name says it all: you use the leaf as lettuce. The leaf is also very tasty in green smoothies.

Start harvesting when the leaves are about 10 cm. Then the leaves are still very tender: great for salads. But even if they are bigger, they remains tasty.

Only when the plants are older than a month do the leaves become somewhat stiffer and somewhat bitter. Then use it for a stew or for stir-frying.  Or for a nice soup 😀
