Starting in September: there's still time

September is the last summery month in a Makkelijke Moestuin. There's often still lovely weather and plenty to do. You can still get started too.

You can start from February to November

It doesn't matter much when you start exactly. Set up a Makkelijke Moestuin now, and you're already preparing for next year and the years after that.

You only need to set up your raised bed once. Then you can enjoy it season after season, year after year.

Don't you usually start a vegetable garden in March?

A traditional vegetable garden, yes. First you need to dig over a patch of ground, remove the weeds and fertilise it, then do it all again each year. That's a huge job for just a few months of growing, which is why people usually start in March.

Why September is a lovely time to start

  • You can still sow plenty in September, from lamb's lettuce to endive, and from kale to spinach. It's the right time for around 15 of our seed varieties.
  • Sow now and you can harvest some crops before winter, and others extra early in spring.
  • Some of our vegetables cope well with severe frost, so you can even harvest them in the middle of winter.

  • From mid-September, you can plant garlic cloves and winter onion sets. That gives them enough time to establish well before you harvest them next year.

  • And last but not least: you can often still garden in lovely weather.
