More about our yellow winter onions

Winter onions are fairly large onions that can withstand low temperatures. Contrary to their name, they only start growing well after winter. However, if the plants develop a good root system before winter, you can harvest them considerably earlier than the onions you plant in spring.

These yellow winter onions are perfect for the empty spaces that become available in autumn.
  • Variety: Senshyu Yellow
  • Family: root
  • Number of plants per space: 16 (or 9 large*)
  • Height: 40 to 50 cm
  • Planting time: mid-September to mid-November
  • Sowing depth: 2.5 - 4 cm
  • Harvest time: from the end of May
  • Germinates between 5 and 21°C in 10 to 14 days
  • Prefers full sun
Note: the onions are fresh and cannot be stored for long. Therefore, we only sell them temporarily and while supplies last.

What is special about these Yellow Winter Onions?

This Japanese onion is generally sweeter and milder than most yellow onions. That's why they are perfect for both cold and warm dishes.

The firm, semi-round onions are beautiful white on the inside and have a fairly thin skin: nice to see.

Because you plant these winter onions in the autumn, they are ideal for beds that become empty then. Onions prefer loose and airy soil and natural fertilizers. They also do very well in MM-mix.

Planting Winter Onions

Winter onions should be planted between mid-September and mid-November. It is best to plant them as soon as you receive them, as they do not stay fresh for long.

Growing winter onions is super simple. You can find the instructions for this in our app as well. In short, here's what you need to do:
  1. Choose a spot in full sun, or use a MM-mini and place it in a sunny location.
  2. You can fit 9 onions in one spot. So, make 9 holes that are 2.5 to 4 cm deep and place the onions in them. Then, give them some water.
  3. During the winter, the plants will hardly grow, so you don't need to do anything. However, provide them with some protection against harsh weather and severe frost. For example, you can use a MM-hat.
  4. Fertilize only in early spring. Around that time, the days become longer, the temperature rises again, and the foliage starts to grow well.
Harvest when the foliage is completely yellow and starts to fall over: between the end of May and mid-July. Then the diameter of the onions is approximately 5-7 cm.

What do you use yellow winter onions for?

You can fry, bake or stew the onions, fry them, prepare them in the oven, make soup out of them, and even use them raw in salads.

Regular yellow onions are usually too sharp in taste for the latter, but with these onions it works perfectly. Just like in thin slices on a healthy sandwich.

I also really like to briefly stir-fry these onions in wok or stir-fry dishes.
