Cos lettuce

Cos lettuce is a cross between romaine and head lettuce. The compact lettuce heads are a perfect fit for the 30x30 cm square patches in a Planty Garden. This lettuce can handle heat well, so it’s a good choice to grow in summer.
  • Species name: Little Gem - Sucrine
  • Family: leaf
  • Plants per square patch: 4
  • Height: 15 to 25 cm
  • Sowing time: March - September
  • Sowing depth: 0.5 to 1 cm
  • Germination time: 5 to 18°C in 2 to 14 days
  • Time to harvest: after 6-8 weeks
  • Sunlight: can grow in sun or shade
Want to buy cos lettuce seeds? We sell seed bags separately, or you can get them as part of a seed pack.

What's so special about our cos lettuce?

This tasty, crunchy variety doesn’t mind summer weather. It does much better in the heat than other lettuces.

Cos lettuce’s dense heads don’t take up much space. So you can fit 4 per square patch.

Sowing and growing

Growing cos lettuce is easy: put a few seeds in each hole and keep the soil mix moist. After they come up, thin out the seedlings and leave just 1 plant per hole.

If you’re having a cold spring, you can cover the plants at night with some fleece or the MM-Muts cover to help them grow faster.

And watch out for snails: they love young lettuce.

Step-by-step sowing and growing instructions are included in the Planty Gardening app.

How do you use cos lettuce?

Cos lettuce leaves are great for salads. They’re also tasty in green smoothies.

Harvest the entire lettuce heads or pick the outer leaves and let the rest grow.

Once the plants start to flower, the leaves get tougher and a bit bitter. Cook the older leaves in a stew, soup, or stir fry: delicious.
