What's a real Makkelijke Moestuin raised bed?

Raised beds and containers come in all shapes and sizes. Small and large, cheap and expensive, sturdy and wobbly. And made from all kinds of materials.

But not every raised bed is suitable for a Makkelijke Moestuin. A real Makkelijke Moestuin raised bed needs to meet a few conditions.

Take a look at this picture:

The raised bed:

  • is in a spot with at least 6, but preferably 8, hours of sunlight (1)
  • is made from sturdy, durable material. You can build it yourself or buy one ready-made. (4)
  • is filled with Makkelijke Moestuinmix. (5) If it contains anything else, it is not a Makkelijke Moestuin.
  • has a clear grid that divides the raised bed into squares of 30 x 30 cm. (6)

The growing system

Each square grows a different vegetable (2). That gives you lots of variety and helps prevent diseases and pests.

The front of the raised bed faces south. The low plants go there (3), and the taller plants go more towards the back.

Handy but not necessary:

An MM water reservoir. When you use it as the base of your raised bed, you don't need to water nearly as often and the mix stays evenly moist. That helps your seeds come up more easily, your plants grow better and faster, and you can harvest earlier and more.

A sturdy trellis for climbing and tall vegetables like tomatoes, courgettes, pole beans, and snow peas. (7) The trellis goes at the back of the raised bed, on the north side.

And finally: if you don't want to bend down, or can't, a raised bed at table height is handy. Then you need a raised bed with a base and legs.

So, now you know what a real Makkelijke Moestuin raised bed needs.

Here's how to build one yourself:
