How do you get Makkelijke Moestuin soil?

The right vegetable garden soil is the key to the success of your vegetable garden. Because it needs to contain everything vegetables need to grow well.
Make your own Makkelijke Moestuin mix?
Makkelijke Moestuin soil with coconut fibre
We currently sell 2 types of soil that we specially developed for our system:
  1. The Makkelijke Moestuingrond: this consists largely of coconut, supplemented with nutrients and worm compost, and is specially developed for use in our vegetable garden boxes with water reservoirs.
  2. The classic Makkelijke Moestuinmix: this consists of compost,  fibres (such as brown peat, cocopeat and wood fibres) and additional nutrients. Suitable for all boxes and pots, but slightly less suitable for use with water reservoirs.
If you want a real Makkelijke Moestuin, you really can’t do without it.

Because by using this soil, even large plants only need a 30 cm square and you can harvest a lot from a small area:
For all your veg and herbs

You don’t need to replace it

You only need to fill your box once, because both mixes last for years.

Of course, you do need to add feed from time to time. You do that with our MM-voeding.

If the soil sinks over time, top up your box with some new vegetable garden soil.

Can you make the soil mixes yourself?

Can you make Makkelijke Moestuin soil yourself?

I really wouldn’t recommend that.

Because if you want to make our Makkelijke Moestuingrond yourself, you’ll probably end up spending a lot more.

For example, the coconut fibres need to be properly rinsed and buffered to get the right acidity and to keep the added nutrients available for the plants.

You’ll also want some small pieces of coconut husk in it, otherwise the soil will quickly become too wet.

The same goes for the worm compost: it needs to be high quality and not full of weeds either. What’s more, ours also contains a couple of beneficial fungi that have been specially added.

But you can find the feed, because that’s ours 🙂

Can you make Makkelijke Moestuinmix yourself?

Making our one yourself is even more complicated. Because it contains quite a few different substances and nutrients.

But it’s based on the original Square Foot Gardening recipe, and when I started I used this:
  • 1/3 coarse vermiculite
  • 1/3 peat fibres
  • 1/3  compost.
So you can make that mix yourself, but it’s quite a hassle to find the vermiculite and nutritious compost.

What’s more, when you make it yourself you can never be completely sure whether it contains enough nutrients. Or whether the acidity is right. On top of that, the ingredients have also become quite expensive, especially the vermiculite.

Collecting bags

There are now quite a few collection points where you can pick up bags of MM-mix. Makkelijke Moestuingrond is still fairly new, so there are only a few of those so far.

On the map you can see whether there’s one near you.

Different soil?

Then you are not making a Makkelijke Moestuin. The app and the whole Makkelijke Moestuin system are built around Makkelijke Moestuinmix.

So I cannot guarantee success if you use different soil. I strongly advise against it.
