How do you get Makkelijke Moestuin soil?
- The Makkelijke Moestuingrond: this consists largely of coconut, supplemented with nutrients and worm compost, and is specially developed for use in our vegetable garden boxes with water reservoirs.
- The classic Makkelijke Moestuinmix: this consists of compost, fibres (such as brown peat, cocopeat and wood fibres) and additional nutrients. Suitable for all boxes and pots, but slightly less suitable for use with water reservoirs.
Because by using this soil, even large plants only need a 30 cm square and you can harvest a lot from a small area:
You don’t need to replace it
Can you make the soil mixes yourself?
Can you make Makkelijke Moestuin soil yourself?
Because if you want to make our Makkelijke Moestuingrond yourself, you’ll probably end up spending a lot more.
For example, the coconut fibres need to be properly rinsed and buffered to get the right acidity and to keep the added nutrients available for the plants.
You’ll also want some small pieces of coconut husk in it, otherwise the soil will quickly become too wet.
The same goes for the worm compost: it needs to be high quality and not full of weeds either. What’s more, ours also contains a couple of beneficial fungi that have been specially added.
But you can find the feed, because that’s ours 🙂
Can you make Makkelijke Moestuinmix yourself?
But it’s based on the original Square Foot Gardening recipe, and when I started I used this:
- 1/3 coarse vermiculite
- 1/3 peat fibres
- 1/3 compost.
What’s more, when you make it yourself you can never be completely sure whether it contains enough nutrients. Or whether the acidity is right. On top of that, the ingredients have also become quite expensive, especially the vermiculite.

Different soil?
So I cannot guarantee success if you use different soil. I strongly advise against it.
