What is the Makkelijke Moestuin app and why did we make it?

The Makkelijke Moestuin app guides you step by step through sowing, caring for, and harvesting all our Makkelijke Moestuin seeds. That way, you can garden like a real pro right from the start.
The Makkelijke Moestuin app
We made the app to help you with everything:
  • sowing in the right place at the right time
  • caring for your plants when they need it
  • and even harvesting: not too early and not too late
That makes the MM the only vegetable garden where you don't need any plant knowledge or green fingers.

Where can you download the app?

There are currently two versions. They work the same way, but were built for two different operating systems:

The iOS version for iPhone and iPad

And the Android version

Why did we make the app?

As soon as I started with the Makkelijke Moestuin, people got excited: they read the site, bought my book, followed the step-by-step plan, and got to work.

Most people got beautiful results:

But I noticed that beginners who really knew nothing about plants sooner or later started to doubt themselves. They had set up their garden properly, but as soon as they started sowing, they got insecure:

"Oh no, did I read the book correctly?"
"What do I put where?"
"Did I remember everything?"

Some started very cautiously with a few seeds or plants, while others filled their squares far too full. If something went wrong - because of the weather or pests - they panicked and didn't know what to do.

Totally understandable if you've never gardened before. But the joy of having a vegetable garden quickly disappears. A shame, because with a little help, their vegetable garden would have become the edible oasis they had in mind.

Growing vegetables is all about timing

Look: the things you need to do in a vegetable garden aren't difficult.

The tricky thing is the timing: doing the right thing at the right moment. You can't learn that from a book or a course.

What every beginner really needs is someone to advise and assist them, whenever and wherever they need it.

It's hard to find a human coach for that. So we made the app.

How does the Makkelijke Moestuin app work?

The app is tailored to the Makkelijke Moestuin system and seeds. So it's important that your vegetable garden matches that. You can check that here.

Everything you do in the app, you also do in the raised beds in your own garden. From choosing and sowing vegetables to caring for them as they grow, until you harvest your vegetables and prepare the empty square for the next round.

Throughout the year, you can see which stage your plants are in. That's because the app regularly asks you how things are going.

If a vegetable grows faster than expected, you can skip through to the next level. If it is cold and growing slower, you can postpone the next step for a while.

If something goes wrong, the app gives you potential solutions. Like a kind of pseudo-Jelle who looks over your shoulder 😉

So, you don't need to be nervous. Just try it. That's how you learn to grow vegetables: by doing.

The goal of our app

You know, we really don't want to make you dependent on this app. The idea is that you use it until you think: "Ah, is it that easy? I can do this myself!"

From that moment on, you are a real Makkelijke Moestuin gardener. You'll probably only use the app to choose your vegetables, or to look up what you can sow at that moment.

So the goal of the app is to make itself unnecessary. And you decide when that is.

What do we want you to get out of it?

We see enough sad raised beds around us with four heads of lettuce and some parsley. That doesn't make us happy, and it probably doesn't make you happy either.

What we want for you is a raised bed filled to the brim with fresh vegetables:
Full Makkelijke Moestuin raised beds with fresh vegetables
Full raised beds: we immediately sow empty squares again
If you have that experience, I'm sure you'll be sold. You'll enjoy your own fresh harvests for years to come - or even for the rest of your life.

That's what we are all about and why we keep improving our free app.

So what are you waiting for? Let's grow some food 🙂

What do you need to work with the app?

Besides the MM app, you need:

Makkelijke Moestuin seeds and the app

The MM app works one-to-one with the Makkelijke Moestuin seeds.
Makkelijke Moestuin seeds in the app
They are all easy, tasty, and fun. And all those varieties together are more than enough to keep your raised beds well filled for much of the year and give you varied harvests.
All our seeds are also in the app.

Every stage for these varieties is written out and illustrated: Robbin made more than 1000 little drawings for them.

As soon as you put one of these varieties in a square, a timer starts until it is time for the next level.

But because the weather also plays a role, the app regularly asks whether your plants are ready for that next step. If they are not, the timer recalculates the right timing.

Who isn't the app for?

If you garden in a traditional vegetable garden in open ground, or with raised beds that don't match our way of working, the app won't help you much. After all, the app is made for the Makkelijke Moestuin system and seeds.

It also isn't really made for advanced MM gardeners, or for growing in a greenhouse or cold frame - although people do use it for that too. Just like for the community that's also part of it.

The purpose of the app is to teach you vegetable gardening. You do that with our seeds. Once you've done that for a while, you'll probably have learned enough to work with other varieties too.

An ongoing project

We'll keep working on the app. Every year, we add more vegetables, and we're thinking about better integration between the app and the site, plus better alignment with the time of year.

But all in good time.

How do you use the app?

That's actually pretty self-explanatory. But if you want me to explain it, here you go:
