Stop sowing or keep going?

“Hi, are you still doing anything in your garden? Or is the season over already?”

We come across this question every year around this time, in our inbox or in the community. But stop? Already? It is not even autumn yet. And there is still plenty to do before winter arrives.

Late August: plenty to harvest

The Makkelijke Moestuin in early September

There is still plenty to do around this time.

Seeds come up quickly, and the plants already growing in the garden get a fresh burst of energy too.

Come along for a tour of my garden. I will also tell you about:

  • tomatoes, courgettes and cucumbers

  • pinching out growing tips and fungal diseases

  • what you can still sow

What can you still sow in September?

Look in the app and you will find quite a few options:

Dino kale is an option too. Sow it now for next year.

Winning recipes 🏆

The cooking competition is almost over. What a success: we have already selected 24 recipes and added them to the knowledge base.

This time, we chose these four: lovely recipes for the crops you can harvest in abundance right now.

Competitions and earning shop credit

Speaking of competitions in the community: everyone enjoys them, and lots of Makkelijke Moestuin growers take part.

Now we have an even better idea: win with your post, all year round.

You do not even have to do anything extra. If you write a lovely community post, we might reward you with €10 in shop credit.

I explain how it works in this blog post (in Dutch).

Plenty of food for the bees

Do you have lots of flowers in your Makkelijke Moestuin too? Perhaps anise hyssop from the test seed bundle? Then you are doing a wonderful job.

These flowers are full of pollen and nectar. That is good news: bees still need plenty of food in autumn to make it through winter. Flowering sunflowers, pot marigolds, mint and other herbs help too.

All those buzzing bees and fluttering butterflies are enough to make anyone smile, are they not?

That is all for today

Over the coming weeks, Saskia and I will be focusing entirely on writing and creating a new Makkelijke Moestuin handbook.

It is high time too, because the current book has sold out completely. Although we sometimes see second-hand copies going for ridiculous prices 😕.

Soft fruit in the Makkelijke Moestuin
Soft fruit, such as raspberries, will be in the book too

I will explain why we are writing a new book in the next email, which will probably arrive next week.

But I can already tell you that we could really use your help 😀.

See you then!

PS: Are you just as enthusiastic?
