More about our growing medium

Makkelijke Moestuingrond is specially formulated for raised beds with a water reservoir. It combines coir, plant food and worm compost.

Together, these three ingredients give every plant exactly what it needs: even moisture, air around the roots and enough nutrients for strong, healthy growth.

The three ingredients arrive separately: compressed coir blocks, a sachet of plant food and one or more breathable bags of worm compost.

You mix them together directly in your raised bed to make the complete growing medium.

Why these three ingredients?

After extensive testing, we found that this combination works best because the three ingredients complement one another:

Coir

  • Absorbs just the right amount of water from the reservoir – even in very dry weather.
  • Stays light and airy – the coarse fibres and pieces of coir keep air around the roots.
  • Keeps the surface dry and loose – helping to prevent leaves from rotting and attracting fewer slugs.
  • Never needs replacing – just topping up occasionally.

How much growing medium do you need?

That depends on the size of your raised bed and the number of squares you want to fill.

Makkelijke Moestuingrond comes in four packs:
  • 20L for 1 square
  • 80L for 4 squares
  • 160L for 8 squares
  • 320L for 16 squares

How do you prepare the growing medium?

It’s quite simple.

The pack includes detailed instructions. In short:
  • place the coir blocks in the raised bed, on top of the water reservoirs;
  • add plenty of water and let them expand until all the fibres are loose;
  • sprinkle the plant food and worm compost over the coir;
  • mix everything together thoroughly.
See how it works before you start.

You can sow straight away once everything is mixed.

How do you maintain this growing medium?

During the growing season

Top up the plant food occasionally:
  • After harvesting a square: remove the roots and sprinkle three tablespoons of plant food over the cleared square. Mix the growing medium thoroughly, right down to the bottom, before sowing again.
  • Summer vegetables such as tomatoes and courgettes need more plant food. Mix two extra tablespoons into the square when planting, then add the same amount every four to five weeks.
If you use the app, it’ll remind you.

Plant food for later in the season isn’t included in this pack and is sold separately.

At the start of a new growing season

Coir stays in good condition for years, so you don’t need to replace it. Just top it up if the raised bed is no longer full.

Do add a full amount of plant food again.

You don’t have to top up the worm compost, but you can.

The soil life it introduces sustains itself. It can get off to a slow start after winter, especially while the growing medium is still cold. Adding half a portion of worm compost makes it active sooner, helping seedlings and young plants get off to a quicker start.
