Why add worm castings to coco mix?

Worm castings - also known as worm compost or vermicompost - are made by special compost worms. They turn organic material into fine, crumbly castings full of useful soil life.

The real strength of worm castings is that active soil life. Add them to coco mix and you immediately introduce billions of useful microorganisms.

That is especially helpful with coco mix. Coco stays wonderfully airy and absorbs water very well, but contains almost no soil life by itself. And you need that soil life to turn organic MM plant food into nutrients your plants can easily absorb.

That soil life will develop naturally once you start using the mix, but with worm castings you add it right from the start. That makes nutrients available faster, so your plants benefit sooner.

Note: Use these worm castings preferably when filling your box with fresh MM coco mix. They do not replace MM plant food: you still need to use that too.

How do you use these worm castings?

Use these castings when filling your box with fresh MM coco mix.

1 bag with 6 litres of worm castings is enough for 80 litres of coco mix.

That means:

A box with 4 squares uses 80L coco mix = 1 bag of castings
A box with 8 squares uses 160L coco mix = 2 bags of castings
A box with 16 squares uses 320L coco mix = 4 bags of castings

After the coco blocks have expanded, sprinkle the worm castings over the mix - together with the MM plant food - and mix everything thoroughly.

Then place the grid on the mix and you can start sowing right away.

Why do our worm castings work so well?

That comes down to the composition. Besides the worm castings themselves, they also contain two natural fungi.

And before you think: Yuck, fungi. These are completely different from the fungi that weaken plants or spoil your mix.

Ours work together with your plants. They help release nutrients and strengthen the roots, so the roots can absorb water and food more easily. In return, they receive sugars from the plant. In biology, this is called symbiosis.

Together they make a powerful team:
  • The worm castings contain a huge amount of useful bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms that become active as soon as they come into contact with moisture and food. That gives the coco mix active soil life right away.
  • Trichoderma helps break down organic material and supports the soil life around the roots. That makes nutrients available to the plants even faster.
  • Mycorrhiza works together with plant roots. Fine fungal threads grow from the roots through the mix, creating a network much larger than the root system alone. Almost as if the plant suddenly gets many more roots to absorb nutrients with.

What result can you expect?

If you start with fresh MM coco mix and only add plant food, some plants may be a little slow to get going at first.

If you add worm castings right from the start, seedlings come up more easily, grow faster and become stronger. With sturdier stems and leaves.

By adding the castings, you get exactly what you want:
  • the airiness and sustainability of coco
  • and the growing power of living soil
