This raised bed has several components. Let's take a look at each one:
Water reservoir (1)
Holds 16 litres of water or rainwater.
Waters plants from below, just like an oasis.
Keeps the soil moist and airy, so the roots can breathe.
Forms an extremely strong supporting base for the raised bed and accessories.
Made in our own factory in Aduard, Groningen.
Made using a modern, sustainable rotational moulding process, which makes it extremely strong. The same technique is used for robust, long-lasting products such as sea kayaks and industrial tanks, unlike cheaper techniques such as injection moulding, which are used for nearly all disposable plastic products.
Made from food-safe LLDPE, which doesn't leach into the water or your plants.
Thick nylon wicks draw up the water. These are safe too.
And the finishing touch: a premium aluminium cap for the filling tube.
Almost automatic watering
The water reservoir means you hardly ever need to water. You can even go on holiday without worrying while your plants keep growing.
Here's how it works:
Extra-strong reservoirs withstand both heat and severe frost.
Wicks draw water upwards, just like in an oil lamp.
Holes let air from the reservoir reach the soil and allow excess water or rainwater to flow back down.
Overflow holes keep the air layer intact.
Weed barrier fabric spreads moisture from the wicks across the base and stops soil falling into the reservoir.
A filling tube with a cap lets you top up the reservoir, roughly once every two weeks in dry weather, and check whether it still contains water.
Makkelijke Moestuingrond, with coconut fibres and pieces of husk, draws water upwards, stays airy and doesn't become waterlogged.
Small seedlings: in dry weather, the top layer of soil mix has no moisture. Water that square a little every day after sowing. Once the seedlings emerge, continue for another week. Their roots will then be long enough to reach the moist soil.
A wooden raised bed
The raised bed is made from thick, 28 mm Douglas fir planks from responsibly managed forests in the Belgian Ardennes. These beautiful, resin-rich planks last 7 to 10 years.
The rest of the raised bed, including the reservoir and fixings, lasts much longer, so you'll only need to replace the planks when the time comes.
Sooner or later, the planks will warp a little. That's normal for wood.
After about a year, they'll also turn grey. To preserve the colour and grain, rub them with raw linseed oil each year. Boiled linseed oil is an option too, but works less well.
Optional: a trellis
A sturdy stainless steel trellis for climbing crops such as tomatoes, climbing courgettes and beans. Includes hemp twine to train your plants along.
It clicks into the reservoirs without drilling, like a pole in a parasol base. Once fitted, the trellis stands firmly and won't blow over.
You can also add it later. Simply move a little soil aside and click the poles into the holes in the reservoir.
Coming soon:
Electric slug fence 2.0
We expect this new electric slug fence in early 2027, well before the next slug season.
It will have a USB-C rechargeable battery. The small grooves in the reservoir will make it fairly straightforward to install.
Steel table sets
These premium table sets are made from extremely strong steel, powder-coated in the same colour as the water reservoirs.
The reservoirs fit neatly into the frame, making it easy to place the raised bed on it. The reservoirs themselves form a very strong base.
The whole structure is much stronger than it needs to be, which is exactly what we want.
We expect them around November.
Makkelijke Moestuin is a complete system
And this raised bed is an important part of it:
Soil mix draws up water, stays airy and is full of soil life.
Plant food tops up the nutrients in the soil.
Included: water reservoir.
Included: water-absorbing wicks.
Seeds for crops that give plenty of harvest in little space.
Included: raised bed.
Optional: an electric slug fence uses a low voltage to keep slugs and snails out of your raised bed.
Free gardening app guides you from seed to harvest.
