What's so special about our sunflower?

Most sunflower varieties only produce 1 flower per plant. Our sunflower produces many flowers, and for a long time too. It’s like you’ve got a giant, living bouquet in your garden box 🙂

Sowing and growing

Sunflower seeds germinate easily. But birds love them. Almost as much as snails love the seedlings.

So, protect your seeds and seedlings by putting a transparent plastic container over them. And once they’ve started to grow, check for slugs and snails regularly.

Other than that, the plants grow quickly and easily.
1 sunflower plant fits into 1 square patch. Don't be tempted to put more in: the roots will go looking for more nutrients and moisture and invade your other vegetable patches.

Step-by-step sowing and growing instructions are in the Planty Gardening app.

Extra info: You can start sunflower seeds as early as late March in a cold greenhouse or in a covered garden box. Avoid putting them in the windowsill: they'll grow too fast there.

How do you use it?

A sunflower’s main purpose is to make you happy 🙂

It also makes your garden happy by attracting pollinators and by being a great neighbor for your other plants, like beans. At the end of a sunflower's life, its old flowers and seeds are for the birds.
