Tough for a reason
Since 2008 - the start of the Makkelijke Moestuin - we've gardened in many garden boxes. Made from scaffolding planks, high-quality Douglas wood, and hardened planks. But after a few years, they all broke.
A garden box endures all kinds of weather, is always damp on the inside and often dry on the outside. That's why it warps much sooner than a wooden fence or table.
A box that warps, rots away, or falls apart - that's frustrating when you're just getting into it. And even dangerous if a box is on legs and has to hold around 300 kg of wet soil.
We were done with that. So we designed a box that can handle everything: the MM-hero.

Only then can we continuously improve the products until they meet the high standards we aim for. And we can offer that quality at a reasonable price.
Every Makkelijke Moestuin product comes from our hands, from the design to the moment it goes out the door as an order.

The boards
Recycled plastic
A board of 120 cm weighs about 7.5 kilos and is made from the toughest type of waste there is: plastic that normally can't be recycled and ends up in incinerators.
With the plastic junk in one MM-hero, you can easily fill a living space of dozens of square meters, up to the ceiling. We're super proud that we can turn part of the plastic problem into a beautiful product.
Because the boards are pressed at high temperatures, this material has been thoroughly tested and found to be completely safe. Both for the environment and for you.

These solid boards are 3 cm thick and super heavy: one 120 cm board weighs about 7.5 kilos. They're made from the toughest type of waste plastic there is.
Some plastic waste - like from plastic bottles - can be fairly easily recycled. You can see that in the plastic planters from other brands or in our MM-minis and MM-airbak.
But 60% can't be. Either because the plastic isn't suitable for it, or it's mixed with other materials. So it either gets burned or covered with a layer of soil.

What can be done is making sturdy boards from it that we use for our Hero's. By buying the largest Hero, you clean up about 30 kilos of that tough plastic waste. If you piled all that plastic up, you could probably fill your entire living room with it. Or twice if you live in a small apartment.
That 30 kilos is about the amount of plastic waste the average Westerner produces in a year. So imagine this: by buying just one Hero, you’re offsetting an entire year of plastic guilt. 🙂

Because of how they’re made, the boards are a bit less smooth, the color isn’t completely uniform, and you might even spot a bit of sparkle — from chip bags. 🙂
Do these recycled boards release plastic or other harmful substances?
Nope. Not even microplastics.

This material meets the strictest environmental and safety standards and is even used in nature reserves for shoreline protection. It stays intact, even when constantly exposed to water.
It’s also resistant to UV and salt, and won’t leach anything harmful into your soil or groundwater. After all, you want to enjoy your homegrown veggies 100% safely.
Hardened bamboo
These heavy planks are made from compressed bamboo. That material stays good for at least 20 years. Especially if you rub it with oil every year.
Sustainably harvested bamboo prevents the cutting down of (tropical) forests: it lasts longer than hardwood and grows 10x faster than trees. Plus, it absorbs up to 5x more nitrogen and releases 35% more oxygen.
Additionally, the material is 100% safe and meets the strictest EU standard there is (EN 717 / E1).

This type of bamboo grows incredibly fast - sometimes up to 1 meter a day in spring - and develops very tall and thick stems. These stems become woody quite quickly, so they can be harvested after about 5 years: that's 10 times faster than trees.

From the root system of a bamboo plant, different stems grow. Harvesting a portion of them annually (20 to 25%) keeps the plants healthy, allowing them to produce new ones. This way, the forest is maintained.
Add to that the fact that a well-managed bamboo forest also absorbs up to 5 times more nitrogen than a regular forest and releases 35% more oxygen, and you understand why bamboo is so good for the environment.

Stainless steel
For the base and legs, and all the coupling materials - like the corner pieces, nuts, and screws - we use thick and sturdy stainless steel for our MM-heroes.
This makes your box last forever, and you can easily take it apart and put it back together. For example, if you're moving.
Water reservoirs
Our water reservoirs have two functions:
- they form a strong base
- they provide your plants' roots with moisture and air
These strong, waterproof containers can hold 15 liters, 30 liters, or 60 liters of water, so even during long dry spells, you only need to water occasionally. If too much water gets in—like from endless rain—it drains out through the holes in the sides of the container.
Above the water, there's a layer of air that keeps the mix from getting too wet and rotting. Four wicks draw the water up into the mix.
We make these hollow reservoirs ourselves from sturdy LLDPE plastic. This makes them resistant to both heat and frost, 100% food-safe, and easy to recycle. Plus, they're super strong.
Makkelijke Moestuin Mix
This soil mix is specially made for our system, so your veggies get exactly what they need to grow healthy and strong: moisture, nutrients, water, and air.
Because of this, the plants don't need to develop large root balls, and even big plants - like tomatoes and sunflowers - do just fine in a 30 by 30 cm space with a mix layer of 15 to 20 cm.

If you choose a container with water reservoirs, it's extra important that the mix doesn't stay too wet, like from continuous rain.
You can prevent this by adding perlite granules to the mix. This makes the mix extra airy, drains excess moisture, and also reduces settling.
So if you order such a container including the mix, you'll also get one or more bags of perlite: 1 bag per water reservoir - or 4 spaces.
You can leave this mix in your box year after year, so you don't need to replace it. Just top it off a bit at the start of a new season and give your plants some MM nutrients every now and then. If you use the app, you'll get a notification for that.

Perlite is a volcanic rock that forms when lava or magma with a high water content cools quickly. If you heat it later to about 850-900 °C, the water inside expands and the rock puffs up into a light, porous material.
If you make small granules from it, you can mix them really well into the MM-mix. We highly recommend this when using water reservoirs.

Climbing frame
Vertical climbing frames are an important part of the Makkelijke Moestuin. You tie tall veggies to them: pole beans and snow peas climb up on their own. This way, they take up way less space than usual.
Made from sturdy scaffolding pipes, and the couplings and brackets are made of galvanized cast iron. This makes the frame super strong, it won't blow over, and it's resistant to both heat and cold.
The included net has handy 10 by 10 cm meshes, is made of UV-resistant material, and lasts a long time.
Snail electric fence
In a Makkelijke Moestuin, you already have fewer issues with snails than in a traditional garden, and our app gives you tips to keep them at bay as much as possible.
But: if you live in an area with a TON of snails, it can really ruin your gardening fun.
Luckily, the steel legs of the table model already keep almost all snails away. But since there wasn't a solution for the Hero’s without legs, we made this electric fence against snails ourselves.
This keeps (almost) all snails away: naked or shelled, small or large. Because as soon as a snail touches 2 of the 4 wires, it gets a little shock and turns around.

This way, MM-ing becomes fun again, even if there's a snail infestation. This electric fence is specially made for the MM-heroes and MM-bamboos, not for other boxes. (You can order and install it later too.)
