Perlite is a natural volcanic rock that you can add to the MM-mix at the water reservoirs. It makes the mix extra airy, drains off excess moisture, and prevents the mix from collapsing.

How do you use perlite?
Super simple: mix a 5-liter bag of perlite into the Makkelijke Moestuin mix for every 4 squares - or 1 water reservoir. You can do this either when filling your box or if the mix has been in there for a while.
Mix it all together well so the perlite is nicely distributed. After that, you can just start planting in your box.

Perlite is a volcanic rock that forms when lava or magma with a high water content cools quickly. So it's all-natural and absolutely not harmful to the environment or to you. Not even when it's in the mix from which you harvest your veggies.
When perlite is heated to about 850-900 °C, the water inside expands and it puffs up into a light, porous material. Think of it like popcorn. If you make small granules out of it, you can mix them really well into the MM-mix.
The granules are white, super light, and hold moisture pretty well. But because they're porous, they also hold a lot of air. And plant roots really love that 🙂
