More about our Perlite
Perlite is a natural volcanic rock that you can add to the MM-mix at the water reservoirs. It makes the mix extra airy, drains off excess moisture, and prevents the mix from collapsing.
That's why it's perfect for use at the water reservoirs.

How do you use perlite?
Super simple: mix a 5-liter bag of perlite into the Makkelijke Moestuin mix for every 4 squares - or 1 water reservoir. You can do this either when filling your box or if the mix has been in there for a while.
Mix it all together well so the perlite is nicely distributed. After that, you can just start planting in your box.

Perlite is a volcanic rock that forms when lava or magma with a high water content cools quickly. So it's all-natural and absolutely not harmful to the environment or to you. Not even when it's in the mix from which you harvest your veggies.
When perlite is heated to about 850-900 °C, the water inside expands and it puffs up into a light, porous material. Think of it like popcorn. If you make small granules out of it, you can mix them really well into the MM-mix.
The granules are white, super light, and hold moisture pretty well. But because they're porous, they also hold a lot of air. And plant roots really love that 🙂

In containers with a water reservoir, it's important that the mix doesn't stay too wet. For example, if it keeps raining.
Your plants' roots love moisture, but they also need air. If the soil gets too dense or heavy, roots can 'suffocate,' and you definitely want to avoid that. Perlite helps prevent this problem.
It ensures that:
- Water from the reservoir is absorbed evenly
- The mix stays airy, even when it's wet from a lot of rain
- Excess water can easily drain away, preventing root rot
If you add perlite to the MM-mix in your containers with water reservoirs, your plants get exactly what they need: enough moisture, plenty of air, and a perfect environment to grow strong.
And because the mix stays more airy, you're less likely to have issues like algae and moss forming on the surface of your container.

Yes indeed. It makes the mix extra airy and prevents the mix from collapsing.
And because the mix becomes looser, it will be more pleasant to work in. Moreover, you will have less trouble with algae and moss formation when the weather becomes wet and dark.
Keep in mind that perlite holds quite a bit of moisture, but also drains well. So you may have to water just a little more often in dry times. Something you only have to do once in a while when using the water reservoirs.
