What's so special about our butter beans?

Unlike other green beans, butter beans more yellow than green. The taste is also slightly milder than your average green bean.

This butter bean variety produces compact plants that don’t take up as much space as other varieties. Perfect for your 30x30 cm patch or MM-Mini.

Sowing and growing

Germination is tough in cold or rainy weather, so give these seeds a head start indoors. Mix together 1 part MM-Mix and 1 part fine Vermiculite, plant your seeds in a pot, and put your pots on the windowsill.

As soon as you see the first seedings, transfer them to their final home outside. Choose a plot at the back of your garden box or MM-Mini.

Once the plants make it past the first couple of weeks, they’ll grow without a hitch.

You can fit 9 bean plants in one 30x30 cm patch. The plants grow to 40-50 cm tall, so make them a mini support rack for some extra support. You can build one from garden wire fencing in a few minutes.

Step-by-step sowing and growing instructions are in the Planty Gardening app.

How do you use butter beans?

Harvest the beans when they are about 13-14 cm long: that's when they are tastiest.

Always cook your butter beans. Don't eat them raw.

Serve as a side dish or add them to salads, stir fries, and soups.
